Resources for Navigating 4th Grade Writing Fourth grade is a year of multiple writing assignments and learning how to write using various styles. Students will be moving beyond simple sentences and one paragraph pieces towards more complex sentence structures and multiple paragraph compositions.
We will begin the year by reviewing complete sentences and learning to construct a well-written paragraph. What about the rest of the year? Here is a brief preview of what the students will be doing this year.
The Writing Process — Students will learn to write for different purposes and will take various projects through the steps of the writing process — prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Responding to literature — Students will write frequent responses to the assigned reading in their Reading Response Journals.
Narrative Writing— The 4th graders will be writing both personal and fictional narratives. The personal narrative is a story about a moment in their life. This is a great introductory writing assignment because the students will be writing about themselves and their own experiences which means they will have plenty to write about.
The fictional narratives are fun because they give the students an opportunity to be really creative and come up with both a plot and characters of their own design.
Expository Writing — Students will being writing responses to their non-fiction texts. They will also be writing paragraphs about various areas of study covered this year. Grammar — Students will review concepts from last year and learn new grammar skills through daily practice using grammar packets and their daily writing assignments.
Handwriting — All students will be required to write in their best penmanship on all assignments. Students will have the choice of writing in cursive, using their best printing or typing their final drafts of projects.
